On clear days, the panoramic views atop Mount Mitchell are magnificent and well worth the hike to the highest peak east of the Mississippi. But when fog or clouds roll in, the Extreme Contrasts of dead trees among thriving evergreens provide for a different kind of stark beauty that might not be noticed on a bright, sunny day.
